It's an updated version of my previous Smoke Song. This one is completely filled out, and sung more or less on key.
If Montana continues to suffer the "fires of the century" every 3-4 years, there ain't gonna be nothing left. It'll look like Utah.
Smoke’s so thick, it’s like a London fog
It’s not even safe to go and walk the dog
My eyes are burning and it’s hard to breathe
I can’t get the oxygen my body needs
The sun’s as red as a ripe tomato
I’m walking around wearing a respirator
Ash is falling like a gentle rain
And the smoke keeps a-rolling off the burning flames
Bridge
Firefighters flying in from way back east
We don’t have enough people here to tame the beast
A thunderstorm would bring some welcome rain
But then the lightning strikes and here we go again
Solo
It hasn’t been this smoky in the valley below
Since the fires of the century three years ago
The weatherman’s talking on the tv news
He says we’ll suffer even more in a day or two
Bridge
A hundred-odd years of fire suppression
You’d think the white man might have learned a lesson
Well, here’s a red-hot message for the legislature
You don’t mess with old man mother nature
